This is still a great piece of art and history. Measures approx 32" tall x 6.75x across at top (6" at bottom) x. The Asmat Tribe, found in remote West Papua, Indonesia, has a fascinating ancient culture and possesses world-renowned wood carving skills. They are known for their exceptional artistry, and have a complex social structure. The Asmat people regard the bird as a `bridge' between this world and afterlife. It is carved on every bis (ancestor spirit) pole to hold the spirit of the recently deceased. The woodcarvers use a single piece of tree trunk to create the poles, which can be up to 23 feet tall.
