Rare Early 17thC Antique Adam and Eve Cartapesta Panel Carved Wood Panel
A wonderful and extremely rare relief panel made from "cartapesta" and depicting Adam & Eve. Cartapesta is a material that is composed mainly of moulded vegetable fibres and was made to imitate carved wooden panels but at a fraction of the cost. Antique objects or panels made from this material are very difficult to find. Cartapesta can be a fragile material, which is sensitive to variations in humidity and temperature, so finding one from this period is extremely rare. Adam & Eve are depicted near the tree of knowledge in the garden of Eden, bearing its fruits and around which the serpent is entwined. On a branch a bird is perched.
The panel is presented in a frame. The black inner frame/slip dates to the 17th century, and has been fixed within a later 19thC Biedermeier frame. Condition - as per images. Surface wear and craqueleur to the surface commensurate with age. Dimensions : With frame 50cm x 40cm/ Without frame 32cm x 22cm.
