Lovely Pair of French Antique Carved Wooden Panels - French Decorative Doors. (Please note these are being sent from my stock room in France). Salvaged from an old dresser in a house in the south west of France, this pair of cupboard doors will look lovely reworked, or used as a "trompe l'oeil" on a wall. They feature carvings which will have a meaning, I have yet to find out what it is, but I do know they tell a kind of story, like the carvings above the door plinths here in the Béarn which can tell you who lived there in terms of trade (solicitor, farmer, blacksmith etc).
Some carvings are to bring luck, or a status symbol. Cabinet making has always been part of life here, many had two trades - shepherding in summer in the mountains and wrought ironwork in winter, or cabinet making. So back to our doors. They are in great condition, we have gently sanded and waxed them but can of course be painted if that is your desire, and they have pretty brass door furniture. No woodworm present, not sure of the wood but it is the wood the little critters don't like!! And as the feet of the dresser had been well chomped to the point of disintegration, the best (or noble, as the French call it) wood was kept for the more important parts of the piece. 54cm / 21.25" x 36cm / 14.1" and. 48cm / 18.9" x 46cm / 18.1".
I aim to send within 24 hours except on Mondays when there are no courier collections. I use recycled packaging where I can to minimise costs and I don't charge for anything else such as fuel, time etc.. The treasures I find could tell stories and are a link to our past. Any issues with items please contact me first to resolve.
