Knight, Death and the Devil». × 36 × 4 centimeters. "The knight, death and the devil" it. Ritter, Tod und Teufel is one of the three "master engravings" of the German artist Albrecht Dürer, created in 1513.

In the engraving, a Christian knight dressed in armor, in a narrow gorge, accompanied by a devil with a pig's snout and Death-on a horse. Death holds an hourglass to remind the knight of the brevity of his life and the futility of his efforts. The devil follows close behind, ready to take advantage of every mistake. But the rider moves through the gorge ignoring or not looking at the creatures around him. The knight shows an absolute contempt for danger and doubt, which was often seen as a symbol of honor and courage. Death, the Devil, and the landscape are all depicted in the dark tones of the "Northern Renaissance".

Both characters are threatening to the knight, which is encased and protected in the literal and figurative sense in the armor of their faith. This, according to most art historians, is due to the publications of the Dutch humanist and theologian Erasmus of Rotterdam in the" Guide of the Christian Soldier "("Enchiridion militis Christiani").
