This is a rare left and right matching pair of an antique 150 year old Chinese c. 1860's wooden carving with Chinese calligraphy characters as well as floral designs. The carving is intricately carved in Chinese yumu (a type of elm) wood. The calligraphy translates to "Much happiness in the field of plum blossoms" (see pictures 3 & 4) and "Smiles and happiness nurture greens and offspring (see pictures 5 & 6)" (my very rough translation). This carving was probably once incorporated into a much larger piece of furniture like a wardrobe or bed.
During the Chinese cultural revolution most of these fabulous carvings were destroyed. Some were saved and warehoused until recently. As China attempts to maintain her long cultural heritage, such carvings are no longer being allowed out the country.
This may be your last chance to own such a piece of China's ancient past. This is one panel from a larger piece such as you can see in the last photo. Each carving measures 7 1/2" wide by 48" tall (19 x 122 cm) and 1" thick (2.5 cm) and 2 1/2" thick on the right side (6.5 cm). Having been well loved for nearly a century and a half, they remain in very good condition. Please view the enlarged pictures to admire this intricately detailed carving.
