The panel measures approximately 15 3/8" tall, 12 1/2" wide, and 1/2 thick (in center portion). The shape of the back side suggests that it was designed to fit into a larger cabinet or altar.
After it was removed from its original structure, someone attached a modern hanger near the top rear edge so that it could be displayed on a wall. I'm assuming the panel was removed during a church renovation or possibly after damage during World War II. Although I don't know the exact history of this piece, it's guaranteed to be an antique German church relic. Condition of this antique wooden church panel is EXCELLENT with no cracks or structural damage. The carved portion is undamaged. The old wood has some ancient worm holes (nothing active) and small dings but is structurally solid.
The panel has a great aged color typical of antique Black Forest walnut. Overall, this wooden church panel looks fantastic and displays beautifully. It would make a wonderful addition to any collection. Please take a close look at the many photos I've provided and judge condition for yourself. This is truly a unique piece that you will never see again. PLEASE NOTE THAT I HAVE 2 OTHER MATCHING PANELS OF DIFFERENT APOSTLES FOR SALE THIS WEEK. Matthaus Inscription Indicating German Origin.
