ANTIQUE BLACK FOREST CARVED CHURCH PANEL OF SAINT LUKE. The panel is inscribed "St Lucas", indicating that it's German in origin.

It was almost certainly part of a church cabinet, door, or altar that displayed multiple religious figures. I'm no expert, but the primitive workmanship and style suggest that it likely dates from the 1800's, possibly even the 1700's. It appears to be carved from a single piece of wood, with the depiction of St.

I believe the wood is walnut, possibly from the Black Forest region, but I'm not certain. Luke is known as the author of the Gospel of Luke and the Acts of the Apostles in the New Testament.

Believed to have been a Greek physician, he was a companion of St. Paul, whose gospel preserved the most extensive biography of Jesus Christ. Luke is now considered the patron saint of physicians and surgeons. On this panel, he is depicted holding a pen and paper, indicative of his role as a historian.

Behind him is an ox, a symbol of sacrifice that represents Christ's sacrifice of himself on the Cross. The panel measures approximately 17 5/8" tall, 9 7/8" wide, and 1/2 thick. A slot on the back left side and numerous plugged nail holes suggest that it was once attached to a larger cabinet or altar.

After it was removed from its original structure, someone attached a modern hanger near the top rear edge so that it could be displayed on a wall. I'm assuming the panel was removed during a church renovation or possibly after damage during World War II.

Although I don't know the exact history of this piece, it's guaranteed to be an antique German church relic. Condition of this antique wooden church panel is VERY GOOD. I see a faint vertical crack on the back side emanating from a 1 slot that cut on the top rear edge, but the piece is structurally solid. The carved portion is undamaged, except for a small chip on the corner of the paper he is holding and one on a shelf in the background design. The wood surface has a few minor bumps and dings. There are numerous nail holes that seem to be filled with real wood plugs. Most of the nail holes on the back side look more square than round. The wood has a great aged color typical of antique Black Forest walnut. Overall, this wooden church panel looks fantastic and displays beautifully. It would make a wonderful addition to any collection. Please take a close look at the many photos I've provided and judge condition for yourself.
