ANTIQUE BLACK FOREST CARVED CHURCH PANEL OF SAINT JOHN. The panel is inscribed "St Johannes", indicating that it's German in origin.

It was almost certainly part of a church cabinet, door, or altar that may have displayed all of the apostles. I'm no expert, but the primitive workmanship and style suggest that it likely dates from the 1800's, possibly even the 1700's. It appears to be carved from a single piece of wood, with the depiction of St.

I believe the wood is walnut, possibly from the Black Forest region, but I'm not certain. John is known as the author of the Gospel of John and four other books in the New Testament. A former fisherman, he is referred to as "the disciple whom Jesus loved". He stood faithfully at the cross when Jesus was crucified and Jesus made him the guardian of His Mother. John is now considered the patron saint of love, loyalty, friendships, and authors.

On this panel, he is depicted holding a scroll with an eagle at his feet. John is often depicted with an eagle, symbolizing the height he rose to in his gospel. " The panel measures approximately 15 3/8" tall, 12 1/2" wide, and 1/2" thick (in center portion).

The shape of the back side suggests that it was designed to fit into a larger cabinet or altar. After it was removed from its original structure, someone attached a modern hanger near the top rear edge so that it could be displayed on a wall. I'm assuming the panel was removed during a church renovation or possibly after damage during World War II. Although I don't know the exact history of this piece, it's guaranteed to be an antique German church relic. Condition of this antique wooden church panel is EXCELLENT with no cracks or structural damage. The carved portion is undamaged. The old wood has a few minor bumps and dings but is structurally solid. The panel has a great aged color typical of antique Black Forest walnut.

Overall, this wooden church panel looks fantastic and displays beautifully. It would make a wonderful addition to any collection. Please take a close look at the many photos I've provided and judge condition for yourself.
