Ethnic German Carved and Painted Motto on a Hardwood Panel (San Antonio, Texas)

  

This is a one of a kind antique object of art. An ethnic German or Bavarian carved and painted Motto on a solid wooden panel circa 1900. It was conceived and executed in an array of colors by an artist (not signed). I acquired it from a certain dealer from San Antonio, Texas.

He had found it in the area of San Antonio and wrote that it might even be a local piece? 1850s, San Antonio developed a sizeable ethnic German population. I dont know for sure, but the reverse side of the solid hardwood panel looks like American black cherry wood to me. No matter, it is a great item. A German acquaintance roughly translated the motto as follows, What Could be More Wonderful than to Live in Your Own Sweet Home, to Live Happily United Together, to Make Happy, to be Happy.

CONDITION This antique motto shows wear and tear that naturally occurred as a result of normal wear and aging over more than one hundred years. A careful examination will reveal relatively immaterial damages to the piece including minor losses. The surface paint is stable and without any overpainting whatsoever. It has an applied clear coat of natural oil. The carved hardwood panel was obviously dried over a considerable length of time before it came to be carved and painted. The hardwood panel is essentially level, which facilitates hanging it from an interior wall. The wood is hard and closely grained, possibly, from cherry. The applied metal hardware on its reverse side is not original. It could easily be removed or replaced if one is so inclined. DIMENSIONS: Panel length about 24 x about 11 tall x about 1 thick.
