CHinese QING ELm wood Cabinet Armoire Panels of Carved Figures Calligraphy SALE
Qing Dynasty Tall Linen Cabinet Armoire. It was decorated with some wonderful Oriental furniture and porcelain.
Hole in back suggests it was used for concealing an entertainment center / TV. I tried 3 times to get this cabinet to fit into my small condo/home, but alas it's physically impossible to get into the only available room. So I have to sell it, unless I re-do my entire living room and maybe entire home. I LOVE the carved figures. They are very fluidly carved, lively and animated. I just keep wondering what they are actually doing. A friend whose specialty is 18thc. Chinese painting and drawing told me the calligraphy is very good and the panels possibly older than the piece. That I don't know, but someone here may tell me more. I LOVE the panels of carved flowers. They have a stringent, edgy realism. I believe this cabinet dates to latter half of the 19th century. The panels with calligraphy slide in place and are removable. There are 2 chinese characters written on the back of one which may be the maker's mark/signature. I'm pretty sure it is ELM wood with a reddish brown lacquer stain as a ground in the carved panels. I just LOVE this piece and hate to sell it!38"w x 78"h x 26deep. There is a line of lighter area on the left side. Not sure how it came to be.
