1860s Trompe L'Oeil Carved Drape Hearse Panel
Rare antique trompe l'oeil carved drape panel fragment from an ornate horse-drawn Victorian hearse, c. The piece is over two and a half feet tall and sixteen inches wide. Pictured is a late 19th century example of what the funeral carriage may have looked like, though the naive Folk Art quality in this carving suggests an earlier date. The panel is carved from single wide board with the billows of the dark curtain in heavy relief. The piece is painted black with a gold painted cord and has a beautiful aged surface. An evocative (if morbid) piece of American Folk Art and a fitting present for an Edward Gorey fan.
